Transatlantico Michelangelo

La Michelangelo fu, insieme alla gemella Raffaello, l'ultimo transatlantico della Italia Navigazione. Fu varata dai cantieri navali Ansaldo di Sestri Ponente il 16 settembre 1962 ed effettuò il suo viaggio inaugurale, partendo da Genova alla volta di New York, il 12 maggio 1965. La madrina fu la moglie dell'allora Presidente della Repubblica Italiana Antonio Segni.
La sua vita fu gloriosa ma molto breve. Nata come transatlantico di linea fu impiegata sia sulla linea Genova - New York, ma già alla fine degli anni sessanta fu chiaro che ormai l'epoca dei viaggi transatlantici per mare era finita a tutto vantaggio dell'aereo.
Continuò a viaggiare per qualche anno grazie a corpose sovvenzioni del governo italiano poi fu utilizzata ancora per un po' come nave da crociera, servizio per il quale non era stata concepita. Nel 1975 lo stato italiano non poté più permettersi le sovvenzioni e la Società Italia fu costretta a sospendere il servizio.
